That is maximum url length for Internet Explorer. What about the maximum length supported by servers? Just because IE support up to 2,083 for a GET request doesn't mean that we can assume that servers will support. I still think it is better to do a POST request if your request is large in length.
I would agree with you on the part of "not assuming anything" as its dangerous.
However, I think URLs length have some sort of a maximum length which the web server may not be able to handle. I can't recall what's the limit but then, as you can tell, some URLs are really long because of URL encoding. Frankly, if you have loads of parameters to pass, best to use HTTP POST, rather than HTTP GET. That is, if you have a choice, if you don't have one, like one app I encountered, you have no choice but to URL encode the URL and hope that nothing got lost during the transmission. |
