You're a very principled guy, I've got to give you that!
I, on the other hand, can be too helpful. I often will drop what I'm doing to help someone in whatever it is, sometimes to the extent of jeopardizing my work. However, I never let it go that far, in fact, these days, because of tight work schedule, I'll have to ask them the question: "Have you done your research yet?", if they said, "No...", then I'll have to reject them. No point in helping someone out (like provide an entire solution) when they are not willing to help themselves out in the first place. Anyway, being a teamplayer doesn't necessarily mean being helpful. Imagine this, if you finish all your work as allocated in the team, that means you've done your part, i.e. you did your job in the team. Being helpful in a team, is a different matter altogether. The more concise defintion of "teamwork" is *Cooperative effort by the members of a group or team to achieve a common goal.*, so, as long as you cooperate with your members to achieve a goal, that's teamwork. "team player" a noun, which means *a person who joins in a collective effort and mutual cooperation to achieve a common goal*. Anyway, team dynamics is kind of hard to manage, especially if you're leading a bunch of different personalities in a group. If someone is doing their job in the team, I can't blame them for lacking teamwork, but I might say that they maybe a little errr... unapproachable. |
