Yea... Most of the time, because of our kiasu spirit, we jump on to a new version because of the features of the DB.
Take for instance, MSSQL2000, not many people have moved on to the new MSSQL2005 server unless they were planning to upgrade their Windows boxes. Other than that, like you said, when one big vendor announces EOL (end of life), you've got no choice but to make the big move. Either upgrade or ship out (migration??? God Forbid). Otherwise, it is kind of hard to convince management to move to a new version of a product because the ROI doesn't immediately become apparent to them. |
